The Pursuit of balance.

First time blogger, long time veterinary para-professional.

The one thing I have seen time and time again is burnout from a lack of balance.  We have bleeding hearts for our patients, from the janitorial staff up to the Medical Director, we all get burnt out at some time or another.  There is never enough time or enough staff, or we are picking the hair out of the office chair wheels (spray Nair™ works well to remove hair from wheels, just in case you’re curious).

Do I have the answers to burnout? Absolutely not.  From seeing many of my friends and colleagues over the years struggle owning their businesses.  I noticed they did not have someone specializing in advising veterinarians outside of a corporate practice with an actual business background. I had a light bulb moment.  Veterinarians need someone who understand the dynamics of running a hospital.  Veterinarians should be doctors, not accountants, financial advisers, managers and doctors – all at the same time.  This is the start of my adventure. To help hospitals financially grow through efficiency, without an attachment to tradition or “that is just how we do it”.  Leaving on time (or close to it) and making a profit can be obtained with the right tools, and that is a start to balance.

  2. I feel like you’ve hit the nail on the head! Veterinarians went to school to practice animal medicine not to do the accounting, payroll etc. they do need help!

Not only are you my go-to person when I have a panic attack about one of my animals (which there have been several of those in our friendship) but your drive to better this industry as a whole is real. I know this because you’ve given me suggestions how to better my own business even though it has nothing to do with the animal world, albeit, owning a barber shop has many similarities. Your suggestions have already helped me and my business and I’m looking forward to seeing how many others you can help with your skills as well!

  4. Shelly makes the main point well- the realities of business, medicine, Human Resources, and the age of Social Media have made being a “one person show” a near impossibility without burnout becoming a major risk.

    Having the ability to delegate some work to outside advisors would lessen the stress on any Doctor/Vet who had managerial responsibilities.

  5. Nice blog! Great idea! Burn out IS real. And trying to be too many things for too many people is no doubt a contributing factor. We do not get a single class in business during vet school. We are not business people in the least, and I think you nailed it on the head by marrying these ideas…What a huge need in our profession! I’m looking forward to seeing this flourish!

Your insight and integrity to integrate a well-cared for and supported staff with a financially responsible and successful business model, is powerful. You are a capable leader of this paradigm shift.

  7. This is such a brilliant idea. I think there’s a huge need for this in not just the veterinary field, but in so many small businesses. Most people, myself included, start a business because they are good in their field, only to realize running a successful business requires so much more.
    This will not only save people from burning out, but also from losing tons of money. Well done!
